SS. Raja Mouli reaveals The Story Line of Maryada Ramanna :- SS Rajamouli said, “Rayalaseema is known for factionism and violence. But is also known for hospitality. Maryada Ramanna is about a man who is torn with his two extremities of factionism and hospitality. I am going to narrate the story point here. Hero’s father and villain’s brother kill each other (in flashback). Villain is in village looking out for hero to return so that he could kill him. Hero is unaware about the flashback and whales away his time in town. One day, hero comes to village and stay in villain’s home. Villain initially doesn’t know that he is the same guy he was looking for. I am excited with the story of the movie. There is neither violence nor vulgarity in this movie. I asked him to become fit and he took it too seriously to lose loads of weight. She can act without using glycerine. In time and in budget – Shobu Producer Shobu Yalagadda said, “Rajamouli is a budget-conscious director and he made every rupee count. He completed the movie within the budget and within the time-frame.” It’s a small BIG film – Sunil Sunil said, “There will not be any action episodes in the movie, but there will be lot of thrill. You will see new actor in me which Maryada Ramanna and you will not see any of my old expressions/style. The comedy in this film is generated out of seriousness of my character. Maryada Ramanna is going to be a small BIG film.” |

Raavan movie review
Film: Raavan (Hindi)
Banner: Madras Talkies
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Vikram, Aishwarya, Priyamani, Govinda, Ravi Kishan, Nikhil Dwivedi, Tejaswini Kolhapure and others
Music: A R Rahman
Dialogues: Vijay Krishna Acharya
Editing: Sreekar Prasad
Cinematography: Santosh Sivan, Manikandan
Story, screenplay, direction: Mani Ratnam
Producers: Mani Ratnam, Sharada Trilok
Release date: 18/06/2010
The most talked about movie has finally hit the screens in three languages. With big names like Mani Ratnam, Vikram, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya in the list, the expectations are obviously high.
Story
Ragini (Aishwarya) is the wife of SP Dev Pratap (Vikram) and she gets kidnapped by the most dreaded Beera (Abhishek). Dev begins his hunt for Beera to rescue Ragini. For this, he takes the help of Sanjeevani Kumar(Govinda) a modern day Hanuman, playfully hopping from one spot to another as he joins Dev's mission to search for his wife. On the other hand, Ragini gives a tough time to Beera as she wants to escape. But who is the bad person? Is Dev successful in getting Ragini back? All this forms the rest of the story.
Performances
Vikram looks apt as a cop and his dubbing was also done well. However, he had a grim face throughout so not much of contribution from him in terms of body language or dialogues. His strong screen presence made up for any drawbacks.
Abhishek Bachchan tried his best to look villainous but then he has that baby face which makes it hard to convince. Moreover, not enough power and depth was given to his character which is another setback.
Aishwarya looks gorgeous as ever and she did her bit well. Most of her words were expressed through her sparkling eyes so not much to complain from her end.
Priyamani made her presence felt, Govinda was alright, Nikhil Dwivedi was okay, Ravi Kishan was good, Tejaswini Kolhapure was there to fill the screen that’s all. ‘Big’ choreographer Ganesh Acharya managed to shake his tummy to some extent in a song.
Analysis
The film has arrived with a lot of hype and it must be said that it stands nowhere near the hype. The major failure for the film is the poor content. There is no depth in the etching of the characters and the film proceeds in a mild manner. Entertainment quotient is zero and there is hardly a scene where the audience can connect and flow with the characters.
Mani Ratnam has attempted to portray a tinge of Ramayana in a Ballet mode but the poor background score and just one good song was not much of a help. The film survives only due to two things – exceptional cinematography and breathtaking locations.
It recalls MF Hussain’s ‘Gajagamini’ to some extent while projecting some scenes in poetic-ballet manner.
Editing was alright, costumes didn’t have much work and the art department was natural. If we are to take this as a new age Ramayana then questions will arise on the integrity of Lord Rama’s character. In a way, the villain is shown as the bad man with the good heart while the hero is shown as the good man with a crooked heart so conflict of interest happens.
Weak dialogues and lack of comedy is another setback and to connect to the backdrop of the story could also be difficult. Overall, the film’s only life is its technical values but the narrative or writing are very poor. Mass has nothing to gain from it and other genre audience must have patience to watch it. The openings will be good for the film for obvious reasons but then the chances of film making it to the success mark is very bleak.
Bottomline: Not interesting..
My Rating:3/5
Raavan movie review
Villain movie Review
movie : Villain
Director : Mani Ratnam
Music Director : A. R. Rahman
Producer : Mani Ratnam
Starring : Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithviraj, Karthik Muthuraman, Priyamani , Prabhu and others...
Mani Ratnams films irrespective of how they are and the talk surrounding them are seen with keen interest by critics and audiences alike. With Villain he brings Vikram, who is a brilliant actor and beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan along with his usual teammate A R Rahman, and a plethora of other Indias best crew. So how is this Villain?
Whats It About: Veerayya (Vikram) is a tribal leader who has some grudge against the District SP Dev played by Prithvi. He kidnaps the SPs wife Raagini (Aishwarya Rai) to teach him a lesson. The SP starts searching with the help of few other characters. As it is obvious by now the film is hugely inspired by the tale of Ramayana. Few characters are inspired from Hanuman and Surpanaka too. However, a dance teacher by profession Raagini keeps questioning Veerayya why she has been unnecessarily pulled into mens fight and as the answers keeping coming at different times, her view of the villain keeps changing. But her quest for to find answers for her questions takes her journey to a climax that raises the questions that few would have dared to ask on screen.
What is Good: The characterization of Veerayya shows that there was some effort into designing it. Vikram is excellent as a Villain who has enough questions within himself, but has the huge cover of villainy to save himself from showing any smoothness. Aishwarya Rais performance deserves some appreciation as she tries to bring honesty to Raagini. Their chemistry is worth a dekko as it stumbles from hatred to anger to understanding to some extent a controlled love for each other.
It is good to see the step brothers of the film Gharshana - Karthik and Prabhu on screen again, though they hardly have any scenes together. Priyamani in the few scenes she has gives an excellent performance.
Few scenes in which the hero slowly burns a newspaper, and the one in which a woman describes how she was raped show who this film belongs to. The concept of the film has to be appreciated thoroughly as it uses the maximum extent of freedom of questioning that is allowed in India.
What is bad: The first half of the movie meanders slowly, taking cues from the likes of Apocalypso Now, Cinematographer Santosh Sivans Terrorist, and Mani Ratnams own Roja. The dialogues by Sri Ramakrishna dont gel well with the concept of the film, as they sometimes are too vague most often.
The necessity to show Aishwarya Rai's dances with one song, and showing the Villain dancing destroy the aura with which the film wants to move forward. Such sequences question the very necessity of having songs in film as the screenplay slows down considerably in the first half. Recently in an interview with the media in Hyderabad, Mani Ratnam said that his film is about raising questions. And it is only in the second half that he takes the story forward, brings the twists, and importantly raises the questions
Technical Departments: From the beginning of the film to its final ending, two technical aspects remain absolutely brilliant A. R. Rahman's music and Santosh Sivan & Manikandan’s Cinematography. If the DVD of the film should be released with anyones commentary it is these guys who should be commenting!
Samir Chanda the art designer and Sabyasachi Mukherjee the costume designer did their jobs well too. Editor Sreekar Prasad must have had a tough time deciding what to do with the first half though he does his best throughout the film.
With these guys around one would think that this movie doesn't need someone like Mani Ratnam. However few scenes have his mark, and the climax, irrespective of how the content of the film was, is stunning and spot on. Mani Ratnam dares to do what he is known to do.
Final Point: The film is inspired by Ramayana and uses Raagini's character to ask following mind boggling questions to those who can put their brains to work:
Is a man who doubts his wife a hero?
Is a man who never touches a woman, even though she is in his complete control the villain?
What is right and what is wrong, and who decides what is what?
Is there an absolute Hero or Villain? What is absolute truth?
While these questions can bother some, Mani Ratnam takes the safest route of not giving any answers. He leaves the audiences in silence, with stunning Rahman’s background song Egiri Po(Fly Away) not included in the audio.
It is tough to rate this film, and yet to say that this film is going to be a great watch. Watch it if you are fan of all the big names attached to it, but at your own risk of coming out of a film with a lot of questions than answers.
bottom line:santosh sivan camera work is excellant..go watch for him.
My rating:3/5
